Comparison of Hinged Box Types: Hinged Mailer Box, Hollow Wall Tray Box, Magnetic Box
You can find out everything you need to know about the different types of hinged boxes here! Based on the price, structure, quality, and usage, we would like to compare the three types of hinged boxes and briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages of the respective boxes below:
- Material & Price
- Tuck top hinged box (mailer box): corrugated paper, the most used hinged boxes with the lowest cost
- Hollow Wall Tray Box: grey/white cardboard, durable packaging with medium cost
- Magnetic hinged box: rigid cardboard, the most exquisite packaging with higher cost
The cheapest of the three boxes is the hinged corrugated box. The costs of each type of box vary depending on the edition, format, printing, and finishing. Under the same conditions, the hinged lid box with a hollow wall and the magnetic box is costing more. This is due to the different construction methods, the time required and the number of individual parts contained. Since the card box consists of one part and does not require any additional parts, it has the lowest cost. The hollow wall hinged box has several components and must be glued, while the magnetic box also requires magnets and gluing, which increases the price somewhat.
- Structural Stability
- Tuck top hinged box: stable thanks to the double-walled construction
- Hollow wall tray box: particularly stable thanks to cavity wall and tuck-in flap
- Magnetic hinged box: stable thanks to the hollow wall
The most stable is the regular hinged lid box with a hollow wall, closely followed by the magnetic box, and finally the card box. The corrugated mailer boxes are at the end of the list, but it is not unstable. The box is stable thanks to the tuck-in flaps and the double wall, which clicks into place in the base and therefore does not accidentally open again. Since it is not glued in contrast to the hollow wall boxes, it is possible to disassemble it again with a little tinkering and store it flat. However, even if irreversible, the gluing creates an advantage in terms of the stability of the entire box. Since the hinged lid and magnetic boxes are constructed almost identically, the type of closure is decisive here.
Here, the hinged lid box has an advantage over the magnet box, because, with the magnet box, the lid can be pushed open by external influences, especially with increasing age, since magnets become less attractive over time. The hinged lid box, on the other hand, has one or two tuck-in flaps on the front edge, depending on the format, which can be securely hooked into the lower part and only pulled out again when opened.
- Quality
- Tuck top hinged box: no gluing, made from one piece
- Hollow wall tray box: tuck-in flap and many individual parts
- Magnetic hinged box: complex construction made up of many individual parts and magnets
The most elaborate and therefore most luxurious type of box is represented by the magnetic box. It consists of most of the individual parts and the most complex lid of the three box types, followed by the classic hinged lid box with a hollow wall and finally the mailer box. The special thing about it is the magnets hidden in the base and lid, which allow easy opening and secure the box. It is important to use them correctly, otherwise, they will repel and the lid cannot be closed. In order to put the magnets in the right places, placement aids in the form of cardboard strips with holes in the lid and base are attached. The magnetic box also has no tabs for tucking in, which could tear and break. With its simple and timeless design, it is extremely noble and, thanks to its high quality, offers a striking experience when opening and is characterized by the typical plop sound when closing. In keeping with its high-quality appearance, this type of box is particularly suitable for heavier contents, such as bottles and glasses, which are appropriately presented as gifts in the magnetic box.
- Application
- Tuck top hinged box: e-commerce shipping packaging
- Hollow wall hinged box: retail-ready gift boxes
- Magnetic hinged box: subscription boxes
Tuck top hinged box has become the most used packaging box in today’s e-commerce logistics industry because of its extremely easy to assemble structure and economical cost, so it is also called mailer boxes or shipping boxes. The classic hinged lid boxes are often used in gift packaging in the retail industry, such as clothing and food packaging. The magnetic lid foldable box is usually made of rigid rigid cardboard and is the first choice for premium cosmetics, jewelry, store products, and other gift set subscription boxes.
Be it the high quality of the magnetic box, the price advantage and the possibility of flat storage of the cardboard mailer box or the stability of the hinged lid box with a hollow wall – each box has its own specific advantages depending on its use. A simple exterior can also present high-quality products appropriately and attractively, especially through individual inlays and finishes.
